I am directed by the Secretary of State for War
to enquire with a view to the preparation of the Army
Estimates for the financial year 1896-97, whether Mr Secre-
tary Chamberlain has reason to believe that the net
estimated revenue of Hong Kong, on which the Military
Contribution for the year 1896 is to be based, will
differ materially from that for the current year, which
is given in the Report of the Inter-Departmental Committee
on Colonial Military Contributions (Section XI) as
$2,018,526, yielding under the recently adoptad percentage
system a Contribution of $353,242. If Mr Chamberlain
has reason to expect any material variation I am to re-
quest that the actual figures may be obtained by
telegraph.
I am at the same time to enquire when it
is expected that the actual figures of the revenue for
the calendar year 1895 will be known, and whether such
information as is in possession of your Department
tends
The Under Secretary of State ?
